My fishing buddy and I were looking for a charter that offered comfortable accomodation, prime fishing waters and a chance at catching some monsters of the deep all with a personalised feel using state of the art gear. We didnt want to be one of a bunch of guys onboard a large liveaboard. We wanted to be on the decks with the crew, watching, learning, fishing hard and enjoying ourselves. The week we spent on Golden Eagle provided all this and more. George Trinkler, Johnny and Captain Tom welcomed us aboard like old mates returning from a time away and we instantly knew this was going to be a good trip. The big Bertram was awe inspiring and extremely comfortable with all the luxuries of home readily available.

Needless to say the fishing was insane. We were targetting big GTs, Blue Marlin and Dogtooth Tuna and caught some impressive specimens of each of the species. We got into stacks of huge Wahoo, big Dolphin Fish, Yellowfin Tuna, Barracuta, Spanish Mackeral the list goes on. Fishing seamounts rising from over 1000m and casting poppers to the wash from 600m deep water is really exciting.

The adventure element of a trip like this is not to be underestimated either. Being onboard as the big Bertie steams into an isolated anchorage for the night, chatting to the locals and maybe even exchanging a few fish for mudcrabs is a great experience. My buddy and I were lucky enough to be invited to a Kava ceremony in one of the villages and enjoyed seeing the 'real' side of Fiji.

We will be be back next year for sure - I am already looking forward to it!

Get out to Fiji and fish on Golden Eagle you will not regret it!
